Google celebrates Borges, my favorite writer.
It’s Jorge Francisco Isidoro Luis Borges Acevedo’s birthday! (August 24, 1899 – June 14, 1986) Some call him the father of science fiction. (**UPDATE—they call Jules Verne the father. But Borges planted a seed.)
Borges: Any life is made up of a single moment, the moment in which a man finds out, once and for all, who he is.
Katharine Hepburn on surviving the “Long Island Express” hurricane: “My God. It was something devastating—and unreal—like the beginning of the world—or the end of it—and I slogged and sloshed, crawled through ditches and hung on to keep going somehow—got drenched and bruised and scratched—completely bedraggled—finally got to where there was a working phone and called Dad.”
Stay safe, East Coast-ers!
only Kate can say “slogged and sloshed” and make it sound so nice
Save the Galaxy, Destroy Humanity
In a study carried out by NASA and Pennsylvania State University scientists (“Would contact with extraterrestrials benefit or harm humanity? A scenario analysis”), several intelligent extraterrestrial encounter scenarios are examined.

Meet George, the Great Dane who is the world’s largest dog. He’s terrified of water and, of course, a gentle, sweet giant.
He’s listed the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s tallest living dog (43 inches from paw to shoulder, that’s over 3 feet) as well as the tallest dog ever.
Here’s a look at George through the years, along with a photoblog of his various trips. He loves NYC!
